Questions, answered

Do cleaners have to use Making Tax Digital?

If your self-employment income — plus any rental income — goes over the threshold for the year, HMRC will require quarterly updates and digital records. It begins at over £50,000 from April 2026, then £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.

I'm paid mostly in cash — does that matter?

Not at all. You simply log what you take, however clients pay. PennyPort keeps the record HMRC needs without any bank feeds.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes — the free PennyPort Go app lets you log payments, snap receipts and log mileage between jobs, all synced to your account.

Can I claim for products and uniform?

Yes — the supplies you use and protective workwear are allowable costs. Log them or snap the receipt and they're in your figures.
