Questions, answered
I rent a chair — am I self-employed for this?
Usually yes. If you rent a chair or room and work for yourself, you're a sole trader, so Making Tax Digital applies once your income goes over the threshold for the year.
Do hairdressers have to use Making Tax Digital?
If your self-employment income — plus any rental income — tops the threshold, HMRC will require quarterly updates and digital records. It starts at over £50,000 from April 2026, then £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028.
Can I use it on my phone?
Yes — the free PennyPort Go app lets you log takings, snap receipts and check your tax on the go, all synced to your account.
Can I claim for training courses?
Yes — courses that keep your existing skills up to date are allowable. PennyPort keeps the record so it's there at tax time.
